Fiat has never been a brand that could boast reliability among its strongest attributes, and it has slumped in our Driver Power survey, dropping eight places down the rankings to finish 23rd out of 30 manufacturers. Owners are fond of the styling, ride and handling of their cars. Running costs, though, were regarded with less enthusiasm.

It should be stressed, though, that this feedback applies to Fiat cars on the whole — too few Tipo owners participated for the model to be featured individually. Image 9 of The Tipo is a reasonably safe car in standard guise, scoring three out of five stars when originally assessed by Euro NCAP.

Another may have been due to the fact that General Motors was developing another diesel engine that could have been used in its trucks and SUV models; a 3. But not just any 3.

As many will not soon forget, GM declared bankruptcy that summer, derailing the plans for a diesel CTS in Europe, among other things. Meanwhile, VM continued developing the engine, but it was never used in a GM vehicle. Lo and behold, there was a certain new V6 diesel engine ready for applications.

While GM has not announced plans for a diesel for its light-duty trucks or SUVs, VM Motori is free to sell it to other customers, and the company may put the appealing engine to use. I also hope that gm has something else in the works, maybe even the 4.

Sometime your stupidity catches up with you. Back in diesels were a non player in this country except for Heavy Duty trucks. Detroit Diesel only made HD powertrains. And Volvo can somehow figure out how to build cars too. And construction equiptment and busses ect. I still own an 85c20 with an original 6. But with k miles on it befor it stopped countingthe motor still runs great!

But it starts right up! Idles a Lil high for another 2 mins and then it kicks down to a purrrrr. Best truck I have ever owned! My 08 durmax has had glow plugsturbo2 water pumps and sensors I stopped counting with k on it.Chrysler had been kicking around the idea of offering two diesel engines for its half-ton Ram pickup since before Cummins, Chrysler's right-hand-engine manufacturer sincethat breathes diesel, designed the two options but ultimately was not involved with the end result: the ecodiesel, which was released in However instead of the brand "Cummins" stamped on the engine block it was VM Motori, an Italian engine manufacturer that Chrysler acquired back in The product was a 3.

It also shakes the ground at lb ft of torque, boasts 28 mpg and tows over 9, pounds. It sounds good on paper, but there could be trouble lurking ahead for prospective ecodiesel owners. There have been reports on several forums of engine failure at low miles due to cam gear slippage, and indeed ecodiesel owners have recognized it as a serious problem. While it's a controversial subject, not every owner has experienced it.

Nonetheless, new owners should still take heed. Some problems that have been reported with the Ram are panic inducing, such as the car coming out of park by itself and charging towards its owner. Several people are reporting violent shaking, as if they're losing control at legal freeway speeds. This cam gear problem, if it is indeed a problem among all ecodiesel engines, is detrimental.

An engine has what's called a timing chain, which is driven off of the crankshaft and wraps around cam sprockets, so the camshafts can open and close the valves when they're supposed to.

EcoDiesel Engine Failures - Anecdotal and Reviews

That's why it is called a timing chain, as it ensures the timing of the valves opening and closing stays where it should. If the timing chain slips, the cams mistime, and if it happens to a harsh enough degree the engine simply won't start anymore, because valves are or will soon be hitting pistons at that point. A mechanic will then charge thousands to rip apart the engine and reset the timing, or replace the timing chain altogether.

It's been reported that when this cam gear slipping occurs it's on engines with around 70k miles, which to the average driver is about seven years give or take.

There doesn't seem to be any acknowledgement from Chrysler that this is a problem. Suffice it to say the cause of the cam gear slipping hasn't been confirmed, but there is speculation. Irate ecodiesel owners have pointed their fingers at various potential catalysts. However this user on a forum, who experienced cam gear slip in his own ecodiesel Ram, made a video showing the innards of his engine and described the culprit as the singular bolt that holds the cam gear and high pressure fuel pump gear.

This seems to serve as the only real evidence against VM's design, but other users report simply that the high-pressure fuel pump side of the engine will start to slip its timing. Again, Chrysler hasn't acknowledged this issue as an official problem that requires a recall, so the jury is still out on these ecodiesel engines. However owners who have experienced it have traveled to as far as Utah to specialty shops that claim to permanently fix this problem. When GM went into bankruptcythey had to abandon the project.

They reached out to a number of automotive brands and manufacturers trying to finish the development of the small displacement engine. For years we have had customers asking, why not a light duty diesel? There is a lot of interest.

People know they will get great fuel economy, great durability, and reliability with a diesel. It has always been a difficult business case because diesels are expensive, and there is a lot to developing a diesel engine.

We were fortunate at this point in time that our partners at Fiat owned half of VM Motori, who makes this diesel engine.

As well as working with our Jeep brethren on the diesel for the Grand Cherokee.

Drupal 5 to 8 migration

We combined resources and developed them together. That cut the engineering cost down, and made us able to bring this to market. The foundation of the engine is the block. Just about every single component connects to the block and it really is a key component to the success of the engine.

CGI blocks are becoming the norm with modern engines because it is stronger than a traditional iron block. Due to the increased strength, engineers can reduce the size of the block, thus reducing the weight. Photo courtesy of Banks Power. To further strengthen the block, VM opted to use a bedplate.

There are four bolts 14mm per main, but then an additional eight bolts 12mm holding the bedplate down. This is the equivalent of having six bolts per main. A forged steel crankshaft was designed to hold the cast iron connecting rods not Powered Metal Rods that are connected to cast aluminum pistons. With the pistons being cast, VM was able to integrate a steel top ring groove for increased durability. To keep the pistons cool during heavy duty cycles, each cylinder has an oil jet squirter at the bottom of each cylinder that sprays oil up into the piston to remove heat.

The pistons, also, feature a full floating wrist pin. Keeping the rotating assembly as light as possible, without sacrificing on strength, the top of the rods on the piston side have a keystone shape they are cut in at an angle to reduce size.

While that may seem like an overkill on a diesel engine, every ounce matters when it comes to acceleration as well as drag i. For us in the truck market, the heads are quite unique. After decades of gasoline engines offering dual overhead camshafts the EcoDiesel is the first light duty diesel engine in the truck market to offer a dual overhead camshaft design.

The DOHC heads are constructed from aluminum for significant weight savings. VM Motori has spent decades developing diesel engines. While their early aluminum heads had issues, those problems are a distant memory. You are currently viewing the FIAT Forum as a guest which gives you limited access to our many features.

FIAT will no doubt have done a considerable amount of testing of the prototypes and early production engines, but nobody knows how the mass produced cars will stand up to the rigours of real-world driving. I haven't heard any horror stories, admittedly the engines are probably too new to really see any effects of bad maintenance, but as said, modern car engines don't have the safety margin older engines had with their lower specific power outputs.

It's true - like all manufacturers there have been a few fragile ones along the way, but in general they're pretty tough and well up to the job. I can say first hand it is not a coincidence any longer, these engines have some critical issues that need addressing. These issues have become highlighted by a recent huge incentive that FCA provided for the remaining Ram s, including an additional discount for EcoDiesel equipped trucks.

Since then, 5 have check engine lights, 2 require new DEF tanks, one seized engine. This is on the backs of 2 pre-ownedRam EcoDiesel equipped trucks sitting behind my service bay waiting on engines, and warranty acceptance from FCA. Keep an eye on this engine's longevity and reputation as Ford and GM release their half-ton diesels, I have some concerns personally.
