Several people are reporting violent shaking, as if they're losing control at legal freeway speeds. This cam gear problem, if it is indeed a problem among all ecodiesel engines, is detrimental.
An engine has what's called a timing chain, which is driven off of the crankshaft and wraps around cam sprockets, so the camshafts can open and close the valves when they're supposed to.

That's why it is called a timing chain, as it ensures the timing of the valves opening and closing stays where it should. If the timing chain slips, the cams mistime, and if it happens to a harsh enough degree the engine simply won't start anymore, because valves are or will soon be hitting pistons at that point. A mechanic will then charge thousands to rip apart the engine and reset the timing, or replace the timing chain altogether.
It's been reported that when this cam gear slipping occurs it's on engines with around 70k miles, which to the average driver is about seven years give or take.
There doesn't seem to be any acknowledgement from Chrysler that this is a problem. Suffice it to say the cause of the cam gear slipping hasn't been confirmed, but there is speculation. Irate ecodiesel owners have pointed their fingers at various potential catalysts. However this user on a forum, who experienced cam gear slip in his own ecodiesel Ram, made a video showing the innards of his engine and described the culprit as the singular bolt that holds the cam gear and high pressure fuel pump gear.
This seems to serve as the only real evidence against VM's design, but other users report simply that the high-pressure fuel pump side of the engine will start to slip its timing. Again, Chrysler hasn't acknowledged this issue as an official problem that requires a recall, so the jury is still out on these ecodiesel engines. However owners who have experienced it have traveled to as far as Utah to specialty shops that claim to permanently fix this problem.When GM went into bankruptcythey had to abandon the project.

To keep the pistons cool during heavy duty cycles, each cylinder has an oil jet squirter at the bottom of each cylinder that sprays oil up into the piston to remove heat.
The pistons, also, feature a full floating wrist pin. Keeping the rotating assembly as light as possible, without sacrificing on strength, the top of the rods on the piston side have a keystone shape they are cut in at an angle to reduce size.
While that may seem like an overkill on a diesel engine, every ounce matters when it comes to acceleration as well as drag i. For us in the truck market, the heads are quite unique. FIAT will no doubt have done a considerable amount of testing of the prototypes and early production engines, but nobody knows how the mass produced cars will stand up to the rigours of real-world driving. I haven't heard any horror stories, admittedly the engines are probably too new to really see any effects of bad maintenance, but as said, modern car engines don't have the safety margin older engines had with their lower specific power outputs.
Join Date: Feb I think the engines will be fine, italian engines always have been, its the rest of the car specifically the suspension that will be its down fall if anything, with second most likely candiate being electronic gremlins. It's true - like all manufacturers there have been a few fragile ones along the way, but in general they're pretty tough and well up to the job. I can say first hand it is not a coincidence any longer, these engines have some critical issues that need addressing. These issues have become highlighted by a recent huge incentive that FCA provided for the remaining Ram s, including an additional discount for EcoDiesel equipped trucks.
Since then, 5 have check engine lights, 2 require new DEF tanks, one seized engine. This is on the backs of 2 pre-ownedRam EcoDiesel equipped trucks sitting behind my service bay waiting on engines, and warranty acceptance from FCA. Keep an eye on this engine's longevity and reputation as Ford and GM release their half-ton diesels, I have some concerns personally.
